Blessed Miguel Pro

Biography of Blessed Miguel Pro

Blessed Miguel Pro (1891-1927) was a Mexican Roman Catholic Jesuit priest and martyr who is remembered for his dedication to serving the poor and marginalized, and for his courage and faith during a period of political turmoil in Mexico.

Pro was born in Guadalupe, Mexico in 1891, and entered the Jesuit order in 1913. After completing his studies, he was ordained as a priest in 1925 and immediately began working with the poor and marginalized in the slums of Mexico City. He was known for his compassion, his selflessness and his dedication to the people he served.

In the 1920s, Mexico was in a state of political upheaval, with the government suppressing any opposition, many priests were persecuted, arrested, and executed. Pro, despite the danger, continued to minister to the people, often going undercover to avoid arrest. He provided food, shelter, education, and spiritual guidance to the poor and marginalized, and also helped to provide medical care and shelter to refugees.

Pro’s dedication to serving the poor and marginalized, and his refusal to back down in the face of danger, made him a target of the Mexican government. He was arrested in November 1927, along with several other priests, and was falsely accused of being involved in a plot to assassinate the President of Mexico.

Despite the lack of evidence, Pro and his fellow priests were found guilty and were sentenced to death. Pro faced his execution with courage and faith, and even in his last moments, he tried to console and comfort his executioners.

On November 23, 1927, Pro was executed by firing squad. His last words were, “Long live Christ the King! Long live Our Lady of Guadalupe!”

His execution attracted international attention, and many people began to see him as a martyr for the faith. His cause for canonization was opened by the Catholic Church in 1963, and he was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1988.

Pro’s legacy continues to be honored and celebrated by the Catholic Church and by many people in Mexico and around the world, who are inspired by his courage, compassion and selflessness. He is an example of the power of faith and of the capacity of individuals to make a difference in the lives of others, especially during difficult times.
