St. Adele Biography

St. Adele, also known as Adela or Adelaide, was a French queen and abbess, who lived in the 10th century. She was born in the year 931, in the region of Lorraine, France, to a noble family. She was married at a young age to King Lothair of Italy, with whom she had two children.

However, her marriage was not a happy one, and King Lothair was known for his infidelity and cruelty. After being widowed, Adele fled to the court of her brother, King Otto of Germany, where she found refuge.

After some time, Adele decided to dedicate her life to God and entered the religious life. She founded the convent of Sainte-Radegonde in Poitiers, France, and became its first abbess. Under her leadership, the convent became a center of learning and culture, and Adele herself was known for her wisdom and holiness.

Adele was also known for her charitable work, and her convent was known for its care for the poor and the sick. She was also active in politics, and her counsel was sought by many rulers of the time.

Adele died in 999, and her death was met with widespread mourning. She was buried in the Sainte-Radegonde convent, and her tomb became a site of pilgrimage.

Adele was venerated as a saint from an early date, and her cult spread throughout Europe. She was never officially canonized by the Catholic Church, but she is considered a saint by popular devotion.
