He began his career as a lawyer and soon became famous for his skill and integrity. He never lost a case in eight years. However, he also felt a strong attraction to the religious life, especially after reading the works of St. Francis de Sales.

Conversion and Vocation

In 1723, St. Alfonso had a decisive experience that changed his life. He was defending a complex case involving a property dispute between two noble families. He thought he had prepared his arguments well, but he overlooked a crucial document that proved his client’s claim was false. When he realized his mistake, he felt humiliated and ashamed. He left the court saying: “World, I know you now. Courts, you shall never see me more.”

He renounced his legal career and his inheritance and decided to become a priest. His father opposed his decision and tried to persuade him to marry, but St. Alfonso remained firm in his resolution. He studied theology and was ordained in 1726.

He devoted himself to preaching missions to the poor and the marginalized, especially in the rural areas around Naples. He also wrote many books on spirituality, such as The Practice of the Love of Jesus Christ, The Glories of Mary, and The Way of the Cross.

Foundation of the Redemptorists

However, St. Alfonso persevered in his mission and established many houses and missions throughout Italy. He also composed many hymns and songs for his congregation and for the people he served.

Bishop of Sant’Agata dei Goti

In 1762, St. Alfonso was appointed bishop of Sant’Agata dei Goti, a small diocese near Naples. He accepted this office with reluctance, as he preferred to remain with his congregation.

As a bishop, he reformed his diocese by promoting pastoral care, catechesis, education, charity, and discipline among the clergy and the faithful. He also continued to write books on moral theology, such as Moral Theology and The True Spouse of Jesus Christ.

He suffered from various illnesses and infirmities that affected his sight, hearing, speech, and mobility. He also endured many trials and temptations from the devil, who tried to make him despair of his salvation.

Last Years and Death

In 1775, St. Alfonso resigned from his episcopal office and returned to his congregation. He spent his last years in Pagani, where he died on August 1, 1787, at the age of 90.

He was beatified in 1816 by Pope Pius VII and canonized in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI. He was declared a doctor of the Church in 1871 by Pope Pius IX. His feast day is celebrated on August 1.
