St. Casimir Biography

St. Casimir of Poland, also known as Kazimierz, was a prince of the Kingdom of Poland and a member of the Jagiellonian dynasty. He was born on October 3, 1458, in Krakow, the third and second surviving son of King Casimir IV of Poland and Elisabeth of Austria.

As a youth, Casimir was known for his piety and devotion to God. He was educated by some of the best scholars of his time and was fluent in several languages, including Polish, Latin, and German. Despite his royal upbringing, he lived a simple and austere life, shunning the luxuries and pleasures of the court.

When Casimir’s older brother became King of Poland in 1471, he was passed over for the throne and instead sent to the court of Hungary to learn the ways of statecraft. However, Casimir’s life took a tragic turn when his brother died suddenly in 1484, leaving him as the next in line for the throne. Despite his reluctance, Casimir was crowned King of Poland on November 8, 1484.

As King, Casimir sought to reform the Polish church and state, and worked to strengthen the power of the monarchy. He also sought to improve relations with neighboring countries and worked to maintain a balance of power in Eastern Europe. He was a patron of the arts and sciences, and his reign saw a cultural flowering in Poland.

Despite his many successes, Casimir’s reign was also marked by several challenges. He faced resistance from the powerful magnates who were unwilling to give up their power and privileges. He also had to contend with the constant threat of invasion from the Ottoman Turks.

Despite these challenges, Casimir remained a deeply religious man, and his piety and devotion to God only grew stronger during his time as king. He was known for his generosity to the poor and his support of the Church. He also made several pilgrimage to the Holy Land and other religious sites.

During his final years, Casimir became increasingly ill, possibly from tuberculosis. He died on March 4, 1484, in the city of Grodek, near Lwów, at the age of 26. He was buried in the Wawel Cathedral in Krakow, where his tomb can still be seen today.

In 1521, Pope Leo X recognized Casimir’s virtues and devotion to God by canonizing him as a saint. He is also the patron saint of Poland, Lithuania, and the city of Krakow. He is remembered for his piety, devotion, and leadership during his short reign, and his example continues to inspire people to this day.

The Life of St. Casimir of Poland

St. Casimir, born in 1458, was the third among the thirteen children of Casimir III, King of Poland. Casimir was extremely devout from early childhood and learned much from the good example of his holy guardian, John Douglas. From a young age, Saint Casimir consecrated his virginity to God and vowed to live a life focused not on worldly pleasures but in service to God.

Rejecting the Crown of Poland

At the age of fifteen, when some of the nobles of Hungary begged the King of Poland to allow them to place his 3rd son St. Casimir on the throne, the young Prince refused to employ force to obtain the crown. The rest of his years were devoted to sanctifying himself: he fasted, wore a hair shirt, slept upon the ground, prayed long hours during the night, and waited at dawn for the church doors to be opened to assist with the Mass. He loved to meditate on the Passion of Christ, and had a singular devotion to the Blessed Virgin, which he expressed in a beautiful hymn, a copy of which by his request, was buried with him.

St. Casimir died of tuberculosis in 1483, after a lingering illness, at the age of only twenty-five. Many miracles have resulted by his intercession, and he was canonized by Pope Leo X. He is the patron saint of Poland and Lithuania, and youth as a role model of purity. When the saint’s tomb in the Cathedral of Vienna was opened one hundred and twenty-two years after his death, to transfer the remains to a rich marble vault in the same edifice, his body and the robe of silk with which he had been interred were found whole and incorrupt.
