St. Edwin Biography

St. Edwin was the King of Northumbria in England during the 7th century. He is known for his conversion to Christianity and for his efforts to spread the religion throughout his kingdom.

Edwin was born in the early 600s, the son of a powerful Anglo-Saxon nobleman named Aelle. He became king of Northumbria in 616, after his predecessor, King Æthelric, was killed in battle.

Edwin was initially a pagan, but he converted to Christianity after hearing the preaching of St. Paulinus, a missionary sent to Northumbria by Pope Gregory the Great. St. Paulinus baptized Edwin in 627, and the king subsequently worked to convert his subjects to Christianity as well.

Edwin was known for his just and fair rule, and he is credited with bringing a period of peace and prosperity to Northumbria. He was also a patron of the arts and learning, and he encouraged the translation of religious texts into Old English.

Edwin was killed in battle in 633, while defending his kingdom against the forces of King Cadwallon of Gwynedd. He was succeeded by his son, Osric.

St. Edwin is the patron saint of the homelss and his feast day is October 12.
