“St. Ephrem, also known as Ephrem the Syrian, was a 4th century Christian deacon, theologian, and poet who is considered one of the greatest figures in the history of Syrian Christianity. He was born in Nisibis, a city in present-day Turkey, around 306 AD, during a time of significant religious and cultural change in the Roman Empire.

Ephrem was trained in the Christian faith by his bishop, James of Nisibis, and he later became a deacon in the Church. He was a gifted speaker and teacher and was known for his powerful preaching and his ability to explain Christian doctrine in simple and accessible terms. He is also considered one of the most prominent figures in the development of Christian hymnography and is known as the “”Harp of the Spirit””

Ephrem was also an accomplished poet and many of his hymns and songs were used in the liturgy. His hymns are considered some of the most important examples of Christian poetry in the Eastern tradition and are still used in liturgical celebrations in the Eastern Church today. He wrote many spiritual treatise and exegetical works that helped to deepen the understanding of the Christian faith in his time.

During his lifetime, Ephrem witnessed many of the conflicts between Christians and the Roman Empire, particularly the rise of Arianism, a heresy that denied the full divinity of Jesus Christ. Ephrem was a strong advocate for the orthodox faith and he fought against Arianism through his preaching and writings.

Ephrem died in 373 AD and was immediately venerated as a saint. He was celebrated throughout the East, and his writings were widely read and used in the liturgical celebrations. Today the Eastern Orthodox Church, Oriental Orthodox Church and the Catholic Church consider him a Saint. His feast day is celebrated on June 9.

St. Ephrem is remembered for his contributions to the development of Christian theology, his powerful preaching and teaching, and his role in the preservation of the orthodox faith. His poetry, hymns and spiritual treatises are still widely read and used in the liturgy today, particularly in the Eastern churches. His example of holiness and devotion to the Church continues to inspire many people today, and his works and teachings are considered an important source of spiritual insight and inspiration.

The Life of St. Ephrem

While a mere youth St. Ephrem became a religious in his native city, Nisibis, Syria. Later he retired near Edessa to be a Monk, refusing the dignity of the priesthood. Much of his time was spent in writing commentaries on Holy Scripture, and composing hymns which inflamed the hearts of the people. So much so, that he has been called the Harp of the Holy Ghost.

During the famine of 378, which raged throughout Mesopotamia, St. Ephrem labored unceasingly to aid the suffering. He is honored not only in the East but also in the West. In 1920 Pope Benedict XV declared St. Ephrem a Doctor of the Church.
