St. Ethelreda (Audrey)

St. Ethelreda, also known as St. Audrey, was a 7th century Anglo-Saxon princess and abbess who is venerated as a saint by the Catholic and Anglican Church. She was born in the kingdom of East Anglia in England and was a great benefactor of the church during her lifetime.

Ethelreda was the daughter of a king and was married twice in her youth. However, she felt called to a religious life and eventually founded a double monastery (a community of monks and nuns) at Ely in East Anglia. She served as the abbess of the community for many years.

Ethelreda was known for her piety and devotion to God, and for her kindness and generosity to the poor. She was also known for her healing powers, and many miracles were attributed to her during her lifetime.

After her death, her cult rapidly spread throughout England and many churches and monasteries were dedicated to her. Her feast day, June 23, became a popular holy day in the medieval period.

Ethelreda is remembered for her devotion to God and her service to the Church. She is considered a model of religious devotion and a powerful intercessor for those who call upon her. She is also remembered for her charity and her kindness to the poor.

Ethelreda is also known for her connection to the town of Ely and the Cathedral built there, it’s said that she had a vision of the church and the Cathedral being built there.

In the 20th century, Pope Pius XI gave her the title of “”Virgin and Abbess”” and she was declared a saint by the Catholic church.

Today, St. Ethelreda remains an important figure in the history and culture of England, and her legacy continues to inspire many people to this day.
