    St. Henry II

    Saint Henry II was born in 972, and was educated by St. Wolfgang, Bishop of Ratisbon, at the abbey of Hildeshein. Henry succeeded his father as Duke of Bavaria in 995. Soon thereafter he married Kunegunda, daughter of the Count of Luxemburg, with whom he lived in virginity.

    A Holy Emperor

    On June 16, 1007, St. Henry was consecrated Emperor of Germany in the Cathedral of Mainz. His desire upon as ascending the throne was to reign for the greater glory of God. By his prudence. courage and clemency, he stifled several rebellions in Germany and Italy. He annexed Poland, Bohemia, Moravia and Burgundy to his kingdom, and won Pannonia and Hungary to the Church. He respected the rights and possessions of the Church, and helped the Bishops in their work of reform.

    After securing the Faith in Germany, Henry marched into Italy and overcame Ardovinos, a Lombard lord who had caused himself to be crowned King of Milan. The second time he revolted, the Emperor marched again into Italy, defeated him in battle and deprived him of territories, but did not take away his life. Later Ardovinos became a Monk.

    St. Henry marched in triumph to Rome, and was crowned Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire in St. Peter’s Basilica by Pope Benedict VIII in 1014. His travels through his kingdom had as their objects only to promote piety, to enrich the churches, to relieve the poor, and to prevent unjust usurpations and oppressions. His health failed some years before his death, which occurred at the castle of Grona, near Halberstadt, on July 15, 1024. His body was interred in the cathedral he had built at Bamberg. Fifteen years later St. Kunegunda was also buried there. St. Henry was canonized in 1152 by Pope Eugenius III.
