St. Lorenzo Ruiz Biography

St. Lorenzo Ruiz was a Filipino martyr and saint who lived during the 17th century. He was born in Binondo, Manila, Philippines in 1600 and was the son of a Chinese father and a Filipino mother. He grew up in a Catholic environment and was educated by the Dominican friars. He was also trained in the Catholic faith and became a catechist, helping to teach the faith to others.

In 1636, Ruiz and three other Filipinos were falsely accused of murder by the Spanish authorities and were forced to flee the country. They sought refuge in Japan, where Christianity was banned and the punishment for being a Christian was death. Despite the danger, Ruiz and his companions continued to practice their faith and even helped to secretly baptize Japanese converts to Christianity.

In 1637, the group was discovered and arrested by the Japanese authorities. They were tortured and forced to renounce their faith, but Ruiz and his companions refused. They were eventually executed by being hung upside down and bled to death. Their deaths were considered a martyrdom and they were beatified by the Catholic Church in 1981.

Ruiz is considered to be the first Filipino saint and is venerated as a patron of the Philippines, as well as of Filipino emigrants. His feast day is celebrated on September 28th, and he is also remembered for his devotion to the Catholic faith and for his willingness to die for his beliefs.

St. Lorenzo Ruiz’s life is an inspiration to many Catholics around the world. He stands as a symbol of faith and courage in the face of persecution. His legacy lives on as a reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the power of faith.

His canonization as a Saint was made by Pope John Paul II on October 18, 1987. He’s the first Filipino Saint and the first Saint of the Filipino Chinese community.
