St. Mary Magdalene of Canossa was an Italian nun and the founder of the Canossian Daughters of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious institute. She was born in 1774 in Verona, Italy, and was named Maddalena Sofia Barat after her mother. As a young woman, Maddalena felt called to a life of religious service and devotion, and at the age of 21, she entered the convent of the Visitation in Mantua.
While in the convent, Maddalena experienced a deep spiritual conversion and felt a strong calling to serve the poor and disadvantaged. She began to visit the sick and poor in the hospitals and slums of Mantua, and she soon became known for her selfless service and compassion.
In 1808, Maddalena left the convent and, with the support of the bishop of Mantua, founded the Canossian Daughters of Charity. The order was dedicated to caring for the sick, the poor, and the education of young girls. Maddalena worked tirelessly to establish the order, and it quickly grew in numbers and influence.
In addition to her work with the Canossian Daughters of Charity, Maddalena was also deeply involved in the education of young women. She founded several schools and worked to improve the quality of education for girls. She believed that education was a key to improving the lives of women and breaking the cycle of poverty.
