St. Nicholas Biography

St. Nicholas of Myra, also known as Nicholas of Bari, was a 4th-century Christian bishop of Myra in Lycia, which is now in modern-day Turkey. He is best known for being the inspiration for the modern-day figure of Santa Claus.

Little is known about Nicholas’ early life, but it is believed that he was born in the 3rd century in the Greek settlement of Patara, which is located in present-day Turkey. He was raised by devout Christian parents who instilled in him a deep love for God and a commitment to Christian service.

Nicholas became a bishop of Myra in Lycia, a region located in present-day Turkey. He is known for his acts of kindness and charity, particularly towards children and the poor. One famous story about him states that he threw three bags of gold, one by one, through the window of a poor man’s house so that his three daughters could have dowry and avoid being sold into prostitution.

Nicholas was also known for his strong defense of the Christian faith during a time of great persecution. He is said to have attended the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, where he supported the use of the Nicene Creed and fought against Arianism, a heretical movement that denied the full divinity of Jesus.

Nicholas died on December 6, 343 AD and was buried in the church of Myra. He was quickly venerated as a saint by the people of the region, and his cult spread throughout the Christian world. His tomb in Myra became a pilgrimage site, and his feast day is celebrated on December 6th.

The Life of St. Nicholas

In the last half of the 3rd century there was born at Patara, in the province of Lycia in Asia Minor, a son to a noble Christian. The child had been asked of God with many prayers, and was named Nicholas. As he grew in body and mind, he kept all the innocence of his first years.

Nicholas was still quite young when his parents died of the plague leaving him the sole heir of their vast possessions. He became a Monk in the monastery of Sion near Myra and later was made Abbot by its Founder. When the metropolitan church at Myra became vacant the holy Abbot Nicholas was chosen Archbishop, and in that role became famous by his extraordinary piety, zeal, charity, and unnumbered miracles.

St. Nicholas has come to be regarded as the Patron Saint for children. It is claimed that he suffered imprisonment for the Faith and that he died in 342. Several hundred years later his holy relics were translated to Bari, Italy. The familiar Santa Claus is a based upon the life and name of St. Nicholas.
