St. Peter Julian Eymard Biography
St. Peter Julian Eymard was a French Catholic priest who was born on February 4, 1811 in La Mure d’Isère, France. He was the second of eleven children born to a farming family. From a young age, Peter Julian showed a strong desire to serve the Church and become a priest.
In 1834, he entered the seminary and was ordained a priest in 1834. After serving as a chaplain in various hospitals and prisons, he decided to join the Marist Brothers, a religious order founded in France in the early 19th century.
During his time as a Marist Brother, Peter Julian focused on the spiritual formation of young people and the promotion of the devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. In 1851, he was appointed superior of the Marist Brothers in France and worked to establish the order in other countries, including the United States.
In 1858, Peter Julian left the Marist Brothers and founded the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, a religious order dedicated to the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and the promotion of Eucharistic devotion. The order quickly spread throughout France and to other countries, including the United States.
Peter Julian was known for his strong devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and his tireless work to promote Eucharistic devotion. He wrote numerous books and articles on the subject, and his influence on the Church’s understanding and celebration of the Eucharist continues to be felt today.
In addition to his work with the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament, Peter Julian also served as a chaplain to the sick and poor and worked to establish various charitable organizations. He was known for his kindness and compassion towards those in need, and his selfless service to others earned him the nickname “The Apostle of the Blessed Sacrament.”
Peter Julian Eymard was canonized as a saint by Pope John XXIII in 1962. He is remembered as a faithful servant of the Church and a tireless promoter of the Eucharist. His feast day is celebrated on August 2nd.
