Biography of Blessed Karolina Kozkowna

Blessed Karolina Kozkowna (1891-1917) was a Polish Roman Catholic nun who served as a nurse during World War I and was known for her compassion and selflessness. She was born in 1891 in a small village in eastern Poland, which at the time was part of the Russian Empire.

From a young age, Karolina felt a call to religious life and, in 1913, at the age of 22, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She took the name Sister Maria Karolina and professed her religious vows in 1915.

When World War I broke out, Sister Maria Karolina, along with many of her sisters in the congregation, were mobilized to serve as nurses on the front lines. She served in various field hospitals throughout the war, caring for the wounded and dying soldiers.

Sister Maria Karolina’s compassion and selflessness were evident in her work as a nurse. She was known for her gentle and caring nature, and for her willingness to put the needs of others before her own. She was especially dedicated to caring for the poor and the suffering, and would often put herself in danger to help others.

Her caring nature and love of service not only to the soldier but also to the prisoners of war , made her very popular among the people, and she was loved and respected by all.

In 1917, Sister Maria Karolina fell ill with pneumonia and died while serving at a field hospital in Ukraine. She was only 26 years old at the time of her death.

After her death, stories of her kindness and compassion began to spread, and many people considered her a saint. Her cause for canonization was opened by the Catholic Church in 1993, and she was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2003.

Sister Maria Karolina’s legacy continues to inspire the work of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who have dedicated themselves to caring for the poor, the sick, and the marginalized. She is remembered as an example of service, compassion, and selflessness, and is an inspiration for people who work in the field of healthcare and for those who are involved in caring for the suffering and the poor.

Karolina was born in 1891 in Poland and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Tarnow at the age of 18. She worked as a nurse and was known for her compassion and devotion to her patients, particularly those suffering from tuberculosis.

During World War II, Karolina was arrested by the Nazis and sent to the Ravensbrück concentration camp. She continued to care for other prisoners and was eventually killed in the gas chamber.
