St. Emma Uffing Biography
St. Emma Uffing, also known as Sr Maria Euthymia, was a German Roman Catholic saint and religious sister who is known for her compassionate care of patients, especially during World War II. She was born on April 8, 1914 in Halverde, Germany as the ninth of eleven children to August Uffing and Maria Schmidt. At the age of 18 months, she contracted a form of rickets that left her with poor health for the rest of her life. Despite this, she felt a calling to the religious life and joined the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity in Münster. She made her simple vows in 1936 and received a nursing diploma in 1939.
During the war, Sr Maria Euthymia cared for sick prisoners of war and foreign workers with infectious diseases, earning her the nickname “Angel of Love” for her affectionate care of her patients. She was known for her kindness, dedication, and charity towards others, and for her strong faith in God. After the war, she worked in the laundries at St Vincent’s Hospital in Dinslaken and the Mother House and St Raphael Clinic in Münster.
Sr Maria Euthymia’s cause for sainthood was initiated in 1976 and she was declared Venerable by Pope John Paul II in 1988. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 7, 2001 and was officially recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church. She is remembered for her selfless and compassionate care of others and for her devotion to God. St. Emma Uffing’s feast day is September 9th and she is the patron saint of good works.
