St. Augustine of Hippo Medal and Necklace

St. Augustine of Hippo, born Aurelius Augustinus on November 13, 354, in Thagaste, Numidia, Roman Empire (modern-day Souk Ahras, Algeria), was a renowned theologian and prolific writer. His mother is believed to have been of Berber origin. He grew up learning and writing extensively about Christianity. Augustine converted to Christianity in 386 and his writings emphasized the doctrine of original sin, the importance of grace, and the Holy Trinity.

In 391, Augustine visited the city of Hippo Regius (now Annaba, Algeria) with the intention of starting a monastery but ended up being drafted into the priesthood by a Christian congregation there. In 395, he became the bishop of Hippo and spent the next 35 years preaching, celebrating mass, resolving local disputes, and ministering to his congregation. He is one of the Latin Fathers of the Church and is formally recognized as a doctor of the church. His influence on Western Christianity and Western philosophy is profound and he is generally considered as one of the greatest theologians in the history of the Church.
