Our Lady of Good Counsel Medal
Records dating from the reign of Pope Paul II (1464 1471) reveal that the picture of Our Lady, at first called “La Madonna del Paradiso” and now known as “Madonna del Buon Consiglio”, appeared in the old Augustinian church of Santa Maria at Genazzano, about twenty-five miles southeast of Rome, on St. Mark’s Day, April 25, 1467.
The venerated picture, about the size of a visiting card, was observed to hang suspended in the air without the slightest apparent support. Immediately, devotion to Our Lady in Santa Maria sprang up; groups and pilgrims began to visit the church, while miracles in ever-increasing number were wrought at the shrine, as they still continue to be to this day.
The following July, Pope Paul appointed two Bishops to investigate the alleged wonder-working image. In 1630 Pope Urban VIII went to Genazzano on a pilgrimage, as did Pius IX in 1864. Pope Innocent XI had the picture crowned with gold on November 17, 1682. Pope Benedict XIV approved the Pious Union of Our Lady of Good Counsel on July 2, 1753, and was himself enrolled therein as its first member. Pope Pius IX and Leo XIII were also members.
On April 22, 1903, Pope Leo XIII authorized the insertion of the invocation “Mater Boni Consilii” to follow that of “Mater Admirabilis” in the Litany of Loreto. Ten years previously the same Pontiff had sanctioned the use of the White Scapular of Our Lady of Good Counsel for the faithful. There are many churches and institutions, especially in the United States named in honor of Our Lady of Good Counsel.
