ST. ANGELA MERICI
Imprisoned
St. Angela Merici, foundress of the Ursulines, was born in Lombardy March 21, 1474, at Desenzano. At the age of eleven she was left an orphan, and together with her elder sister went to live with her uncle in the neighbor ing town of Salo, where they spent a holy life. She always tried to please Jesus, the Spouse of her soul. When her sister met with a sudden death, without being able to receive the Last Sacraments, Angela was greatly distressed. She became a tertiary of St. Francis and increased her prayers and mortifications for the repose of her sister’s soul. She implored God to reveal to her the state of her deceased sister, and it is claimed that by a vision she was satisfied that her sister was with the Saints in Heaven. When Angela was twenty years old her uncle died. and she returned to her paternal home at Desenzano. Realizing the need for better instruction of young girls in the Christian religion, she converted her home into a school, which soon bore abundant fruit. Daily she gathered all the little girls of Desenzano and taught them the ele ments of Christianity. It is said that one day while in ecstasy she had a vision in which it was revealed to her that she was to found an association of virgins who would devote their lives to the religious training of young girls. Before long Angela gladly accepted an invitation to establish a similar school at Brescia. “The disorders of society”, she claimed, “are caused by those in families; there are few Christian mothers, be cause the education of young girls is neglected.” In 1524, while on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, she became suddenly blind on the island of Crete. She con tinued her journey, however, and upon her return was cured while praying before a crucifix at the same place where she was struck by blindness a few weeks before. During the jubilee year 1525, she went to Rome to gain the indulgences. Pope Clement VII, having heard of her holiness and success as a religion teacher, invited Angela to remain in Rome, but she, shunning publicity, returned to Brescia It was on the 25th of November, 1535, that Angela chose twelve virgins and laid the foundation of the Ursuline Order in a small house near the Church of St. Afra in Brescia. Its object being the Christian education of youth. she placed it under the patronage of St. Ursula, the chief of an army of virgins. After serving five years as Superior of the newly-founded Order, she died in 1540 at Brescia with the name of Jesus on her lips, and was buried in the Church of St. Afra. Pope Pius VII added her name to the calendar of Saints in 1807.
