St. Barbara
Heliopolis, or the City of the Sun, in Egypt, was celebrated for its learned men and women. St. Barbara was no exception to the rule of learning, and took pains to have his daughter Barbara well taught from her earliest years. In deed, when he saw the beauty of this child first budding forth, he could think of no one whom he thought worthy of her. As all the young men of noble families were as wicked as they were learned and polished, he was not displeased when he found that Barbara loved study more than she loved society.
Greater than the Sun
Because of his jealousy, he secluded her in a lonely tower built for that purpose. As she would watch the burning sun setting behind the three mighty pyramids that stood in a cluster beyond the Nile, she would say, “The One Who created the sun must be greater than the sun itself! Why, then, do we worship the sun, instead of Him Who created it?” And from this time she directed her worship towards the Creator of all things, holding in contempt the idols of wood and stone which were adored by her countrymen.
Through a trusted servant, Barbara communicated with Origen, who had become renowned for his Christian teachings in Alexandria. When her father discovered her conversion, he was so filled with rage that he denounced her before the civil tribunal. Barbara suffered horrible tortures, after which the pro-consul ordered that she be beheaded.
The Virgin-Martyr lifted up her soul to her Divine Spouse praying thus: “Lord Jesus, Whom all things obey, grant that all those who invoke Thy Holy Name in memory of me, may find their sins forgotten on the Day of Judgment!” And these words had no sooner fallen from her lips than the sword severed her head from her body.
St. Barbara is still invoked in behalf of the dying. St. Stanislas Kostka implored her aid under circumstances which deprived him of human assistance, and the holy youth was allowed to receive the Bread of Life at the hand of an Angel.
