Saint Barbara was a Christian martyr who lived in the 3rd century AD. She was born in Heliopolis, in the Roman province of Arabia (modern-day Baalbek, Lebanon). Barbara was a beautiful young woman who refused to marry a pagan man. She was arrested by the Roman authorities for refusing to renounce her Christian faith. She was tortured and then beheaded in Heliopolis in 235 AD. She is the patron saint of artillerymen, firefighters, and prisoners.
