St. Benjamin
St. Benjamin was a Deacon of the Church in Persia in the 5th century. The Christians in Persia had enjoyed peace for twelve years, when Abdas, a Christian Bishop, in 420, indiscreetly ordered the destruction of the Pyraeum, or Temple of Fire, the great divinity of the Persians.
Persecution of Christians
King Isdegerdes, who had formerly put a stop to the cruel persecution of the Christians in his kingdom, now demolished all the Christian churches, put to death Abdas, and raised a general persecution against the Christians Isdegerdes died in 421, but his son and successor, Varanes, carried on the persecution with greater fury and horror.
Among those who suffered martyrdom for the Faith was St. Benjamin. He was beaten and imprisoned. A year later the Emperor obtained his release from the dungeon on condition that he should never speak to any of the courtiers about religion. Benjamin declared, however, that as a minister of the Gospel he would miss no opportunity of preaching the word of God. When the King was informed that St. Benjamin was still preaching the Christian Faith in his kingdom, he ordered that he be apprehended. After undergoing unspeakable tortures St. Benjamin died in the year 424.
May this St. Benjamin medal serve as a reminder for us all to have unrelenting strength to preach the good news to the world despite the oppression and rejection from others.
