St. Bridget of Sweden
Saint Bridget was born in Sweden of noble and pious parents, in 1304. While she was still in the womb, her mother was saved from shipwreck on her account. When Bridget was ten years old she heard a sermon on the Passion of Christ; the following night she saw Jesus on the Cross, covered with fresh blood, and speaking to her about His Passion. Thereafter whenever she meditated on the subject she was affected to such a degree, that she could never think of it without weeping.
Bridget was given in marriage to Prince Ulpho of Nericia, Sweden. By her word and example she encouraged her husband to works of piety. She devoted herself with maternal love to the education of her eight children, one of whom, Catherine, is honored as a Saint; and she most zealously cared for the poor and the sick. By mutual consent, in order to sanctify their lives, they separated in later life; he becoming a Cistercian monk. He died shortly thereafter.
Bridget, having heard the voice of Christ in a dream, founded the austere Order of St. Savior in the monastery of Wadstena under the Rule of the Savior. which was given her by Jesus Himself. At the command of God she went to Rome, where she kindled the love of God in many hearts. After making a pilgrimage to Jerusalem she returned to Rome, where she was attacked by fever and excruciating pains, which continued for a year.
On the day she had foretold, she passed to Heaven, in the vear 1373, laden with merits. Three years later her body was translated to the monastery of Wadstena. St. Bridget was canonized by Pope Boniface IX in 1391.
