St. Dominic
It was at Calaroga, a Spanish town near the Pyrenees, that St. Dominic was born in 1170, of the Guzman family. Before birth, the mother of St. Dominic dreamt that she had given life to a dog bearing a lighted torch which was setting the world on fire, and during his baptism, the noble lady who held him saw on his forehead a star of light.
Saint Dominic was ordained a Priest at the age of twenty-four. At the request of the Bishop, Dominic joined the Chapter of Reformed Canons of Osma, his native diocese. Although he was very young, he was named Superior. He accompanied his Bishop to France, and was greatly saddened when he witnessed the ravages of the Albigensian heresy. Hence forth Dominic’s life was devoted to the conversion of heretics and the defense of the Faith.
The Greatest Orator that Ever Lived
From the record his life St. Dominic was a man of conspicuous and great talent, and was probably one of the greatest orators that ever lived. The Albigenses were amazed and angered by the learned discourses of St. Dominic. Once, Dominic was sentenced to death by fire along with a public thesis written by Dominic in opposition of the pagans was cast into the fire. The document was cast into the flames and consumed whilst Dominic’s was thrown out of the fire three times unscathed. This miracle was spread abroad and converted many. This miraculous episode is sculptured in the marble of the Saint’s tomb at Bologna.
Dominic remained for two years faithfully serving his Bishop at Montpellier, in southern France. Here the immoral Albigensian heresy had reached its height and was causing tremendous havoc. Dominic continued to preach against it for eight years after the return of the Bishop to Osma; working many miracles and converting countless souls.
Preach the Rosary as a Remedy against Sin
In the Breviary Office for Rosary Sunday, it is declared that St. Dominic “was admonished by the Blessed Virgin to preach the Rosary to the people as a singular remedy against heresy and sin”. Popes Leo X, St. Pius V. Gregory XIII, Sixtus V, Clement XI, Innocent XIII, Benedict XIII, and Pius IX, have, with a singular consent and in a most formal manner, attributed the Rosary to St. Dominic.
When in his 46th year, and with six companions, he began the great Order of Preaching Friars, this Order with that of the Friars Minor, founded by his contemporary friend St. Francis of Assisi, was the chief means God employed to renew Christian fervor during the Middle Ages. In addition, St. Dominic founded his Second Order for nuns for the education of Catholic girls, and his Third Order, or Tertiaries, for persons of both sexes living in the world. Among the miracles which bear witness to St. Dominic’s sanctity are the raising of three persons from the dead St. Dominic died in Bologna on August 6, 1221, when fifty-one years of age.
