Saint Ignatius of Loyola was a 16th-century Spanish priest and theologian who founded the Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits. He was born in Loyola, Spain, in 1491. Ignatius was a gifted soldier and leader. He was also a gifted writer and theologian. He died in Rome, Italy, in 1556. He is the patron saint of soldiers, athletes, and the sick.
