St. Isaac Jogues
Saint Isaac Jogues was born in 1607 at Orleans, France. He was the fifth child of a family of nine, and was extremely modest and prayerful-prime requisites for sanctity. He entered the Jesuit novitiate in Rouen, and from there was sent to the college of La Fleche, where he made progress, without distinguishing himself. Convinced that he did not have a scholar’s make-up, when the time came for him to receive his assignment, he asked to be sent as a missionary to Constantinople. However, when his spiritual director informed him, with prophetic insight, that his vocation was to labor and die in the New World, he acquiesced with joy.
Ministry in the Americas
He was one of a group, which included Jean de Brebeuf, Charles Garnier, Gabriel Lalemant, Natalis Chabanel, Jean de Lalande, Anthony Daniel and Rene Goupil, that left France for North America. After a short stay at Quebec and Three Rivers, Isaac Jogues was appointed to the Huron missions. He labored among the Indians, enduring many trials, sufferings and hardships, with very few conversions. It was most difficult to overcome their superstition, paganism, lack of trust in the foreigners and interest in Christianity.
After many years of work among the people, Isaac Jogues was journeying with two companions between Montreal and Three Rivers when they were ambushed and captured by the Iroquois. His two companions, after great torture, were finally martyred. Isaac managed to escape, and eventually got back to France, his body and features so changed from all he had undergone, that he was not recognized when he arrived at the Jesuit College of Rennes. Pope Clement VIII granted him permission to say Mass, which the mutilated state of his fingers would or ordinarily have made impermissible.
After a period of rest and care, St. Isaac Jogues returned to Canada and the Indians. He suffered martyrdom for the Faith near the present site of Auriesville, New York, on September 16. 1646. He and his companions were beatified by Pope Pius XI on June 21, 1925, and on June 29, 1930, they were canonized by the same Pope.
