St. James
Saint James the Greater, brother of St. John the Apostle, son of Zebedee and Salome, was called the Great to distinguish him from the other Apostle of the same name who was Bishop of Jerusalem, and surnamed the Less, perhaps because he was smaller in stature or because he was the younger.
St. James was by birth a Galilean, and by profession a fisherman with his father and brother John. One day as they were repairing their nets, Jesus passed by. He invited James and John to follow Him, and they immediately left their father and their nets to do so. St. James was present when Jesus raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead, at the Transfiguration on Mt. Tabor with St. Peter the Apostle and John, and, again, in the Garden of Gethsemani during the Agony of the Savior.
After preaching the Gospel in Judea and Samaria, St. James set out for Spain, where he converted many. From the Acts of the Apostles (12:2), we know that he was the first of the Twelve to give his life for his Master, being beheaded by King Herod Agrippa in the year 43. Upon his death his body was miraculously transplanted from Jerusalem to Spain, where he has always been venerated as the Apostle of that country. His shrine at Saragossa is one of the most famous places of pilgrim age in the Christian world.
