St. John Bosco
From early infancy John Bosco was trained by a saintly mother in the love of God and Our Blessed Lady. Born in Murialdo di Castelnuovo, near Turin, Italy, he was a shepherd boy until his fifteenth year, when he began his studies for the priesthood.
Prison Ministry
Ordained in 1841, his first appointment was to visit the city-prisons. The young priest was shocked to find among the prisoners large numbers of boys, a great proportion of whom were orphans or neglected street urchins who had been led into evil-doing by much older companions. Don Bosco proposed to change all this and to make them useful citizens and good Christians. This he would accomplish by instructing them in spiritual matters and by teaching them a trade.
A Lasting Legacy
The growth of this heaven-inspired work has been truly phenomenal. The Salesian Congregation which he founded to carry out his intentions has grown today to include over 15,000 Priests and Brothers, and over 10,000 Sisters of the Congregation, Mary, Help of Christians. Some 600 oratories, as they are called, for boys, and a larger number for girls, offer proof of his zeal and of God’s blessing. Since 1853, in addition to 70 agricultural schools, 900 trade schools have been established to continue St. John BoscoÂ’s ministry. While much of this work has been inaugurated since St John Bosco’s death, in 1888, all was carried out in accordance with his plans.
Beginnings were not easy, since many people readily complained about the noises made by the boys. This resulted in frequent changes of locations. However, Saint John Bosco finally secured a dilapidated building, which was repaired so that he could conduct classes for his charges. A couple of rooms were set aside for his personal use and for that of his mother, who had now come to assist him.
John Bosco’s work soon merited an unheard of reputation. When he asked the warden of the local reformatory to be allowed to take its young prisoners out for a picnic, permission was granted. Three hundred of the boys accompanied John Bosco into the country; in the evening he led every single one back quietly to the reformatory. The extraordinary activity of John Bosco was based on a spirit of profound and lively faith. His hours of prayer were the time for “refilling the reservoir” with supernatural strength. The hours of work were the “time of overflow”.
Although his labor was upon earth, his spirit ever remained fixed in heaven! He died in Turin in 1888. On Easter Sunday, 1934, at the closing of the Holy Year of the 19th Centenary of the Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ, John Bosco was canonized by Pope Pius XI.
