Saint Lucy was a 3rd-century Christian martyr who is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Anglican Communion. She is said to have been a young woman who was martyred in Syracuse, Sicily, during the Diocletianic Persecution. She is often depicted holding a dish with her eyes on it, as legend has it that her eyes were gouged out before her death. She is the patron saint of the blind, eye diseases, and eyesight.
