Saint Madeline Sophie Barat was a 19th-century French Roman Catholic nun who founded the Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She was born in Joigny, France, in 1779. Barat was a gifted educator and administrator. She died in Paris, France, in 1865. She is the patron saint of Catholic education and of those who are struggling with poverty.
