Saint Maximilian Kolbe was a 20th-century Polish Franciscan friar who was martyred during the Holocaust. He was born in Zdunska Wola, Poland, in 1894. Kolbe was a gifted writer and a compassionate man. He died in Auschwitz-Birkenau, Poland, in 1941. He is the patron saint of families, prisoners, and the pro-life movement.
