St. Pius X
Joseph Sarto, the eldest of ten children, was born of humble parents on June 2, 1835, at Riese in the diocese of Treviso, Italy. He evidenced extraordinary intellectual endowments, high moral character, and solid piety from early youth. His superiors were convinced of his sterling qualities of soul and of his solid piety. Five years were spent at the seminary.
He was ordained on September 18, 1858, in the Cathedral at Castelfranco. Father Sarto’s first appointment was to the parish church at Tombolo, in charge of the aged, gentle, wise Archpriest Antonio Constantini, who wrote prophetically: “They have sent me as curate a young Priest, with orders to mould him to the duties of a pastor: in fact, however, the contrary is true. He is so zealous, so full of good sense and other precious gifts that it is I who can learn much from him. Some day or other he will wear the miter of that I am sure. After that-who knows?”
Preparing the Seed of God
On July 14, 1867, after eight years of zealous, hard work at Tombolo, Father Sarto was appointed by Bishop Zinelli to be Archpriest of Salzano, in the diocese of Treviso, where he was “all things to all men”. His favorite task was to instruct the children in the tenets of the Catholic Faith. He knew that “By the Catechism the soil is prepared for the seed of God”In a consistory held on November 10, 1884, Pope Leo XIII named Canon Sarto to fill the difficult post of the Episcopal See of Mantua. He was consecrated Bishop on November 16, 1884, and assumed his duties on April 18, 1885. His achievements were manifold and far-reaching.
God, again, blessed his labors. Pope Leo XIII, on June 12, 1893, created Bishop Sarto Cardinal; three days later in a public consistory he was named Patriarch of Venice, which post he held for nearly ten years. His first act was to visit his dear mother at Riesi, his boyhood home. Crowds thronged around his carriage as he traversed the road from Castelfranco, where fifty-five years previously he had walked barefoot to school
The Pope of the Eucharist
On July 20, 1903, the long, fruitful pontificate of Leo XIII drew to a close. Cardinal Sarto was elected Pope on August 4, 1903; five days later the coronation ceremony took place in St. Peter’s. The pontificate of Pope St. Pius X abounds with an overflowing zeal “to restore all things in Christ”. Liturgy the Missal-the Breviary-Ecclesiastical Chant-Codification of Canon Law-Catholic Social Action-all these made demands upon his pastoral zeal. But he will always be known, primarily, as the Pope of the Holy Eucharist.
He was determined that the faithful should imitate the example of the earliest Christians. In consequence, he urged the reception of frequent and even daily Holy Communion for all in the state of sanctifying grace and of right intention. He insisted that children be allowed to the Spiritual Banquet prepared by Jesus at an earliest age, and declared that they were bound to fulfill the precept of the Easter Communion as soon as they reach the age of discretion.
In a series of more than fourteen pronouncements of the Holy See, nearly all within the year 1907, Pius X laid open, and, in so doing, destroyed the cancerous growth of Modernism which, in his day, with renewed force, threatened to undermine the organic life of the Church. Pope St. Pius X labored until the very last days of his life. His Will and Testament contained the words: “I was born poor, I have lived poor, and I wish to die poor”. He rendered his gentle soul to its Creator on the morning of August 20, 1914, and was canonized by Pope Pius XII, May 29, 1954.
