St. Raymond Of Penafort
St. Raymund was born at Penafort, a castle in Catalonia, of a noble Spanish family. He made such rapid progress in his studies that at the age of only twenty he began teaching philosophy, instilling into the students solid piety and devotion. When he was about thirty he went to Bologna, Italy, to study canon and civil law, and while preparing for his doctorate continued to teach, as he had done in Barcelona.
Joining the Dominican Order
In 1222, at the age of forty-seven, St. Raymund took the religious habit of St. Dominic. From childhood he had a tender devotion to the Blessed Virgin. After he became a Dominican, Our Lady of Ransom in a vision instructed him to co-operate with his penitent, St. Peter Nolasco, and King James of Aragon in founding the Order of Our Lady of Ransom for the Redemption of Captives.
In 1230 St. Raymund was called to Rome by Pope Gregory IX to be his chaplain and personal confessor, and quickly became a beloved and trusted advisor to the Pope. Saint Raymund of Penafort spent three years; compiling five books, listing all of the decrees of all Popes and Councils. This collection is commonly called the Decretals and is regarded to this day as one of the leading sources of information. In 1235 the Pope named St. Raymund as the archbishop of Tarragona, the capital of Aragon, but St Raymund declined the post as well as other offices of dignity so as to maintain his humble life.
Humble Advisor to the King
King James of Aragon asked St. Raymund to personally accompany him to the island of Majorca. Saint Raymund tried to encourage the King to dismiss an advisor from his palace who would often steer the King to wrong-doing. The King kept promising this would be done, but when he failed to keep his word St. Raymund requested leave to return to his monastery at Barcelona. The King not only forbade him to leave but threatened to put to death anyone who would help St Raymund escape from the island.
With confidence in God, St. Raymund walked to the water’s edge, spread his cloak upon the sea, tied one end to his staff for a sail, then making the Sign of the Cross fearlessly stepped upon it. In six hours the wind carried him to Barcelona. Gathering up his cloak, which was perfectly dry, he put it on and went to his monastery. The King upon hearing of this miracle became a sincere penitent and disciple of Christ until his death. A chapel was built at the place where St. Raymund landed.
After receiving the Last Sacraments he died on January 6, 1275, at the age of one hundred. St. Raymund, patron saint of lawyers and scholars, pray for us each day, as we wear this St. Raymund medal as a reminder of your piety and devotion to the Lord.
