Who is the Patron Saint of Catechists?
Saint Robert Bellarmine was born at Montepulciano,Italy, October 4, 1542, the third of ten children. After being educated by the Jesuits, he joined their society in 1560. As a young man, he taught Greek, Hebrew and theology.
While at Louvain, he became famous as a controversialist, and never ceased to defend Catholic doctrine against the onslaught of the Protestants. In 1598 he was made a Cardinal, and in 1602, Saint Robert Bellarmine was raised to the archbishopric of Capua. In 1605, he was recalled to Rome and appointed head of the Vatican Library.
St. Robert Bellarmine also served as theological adviserto Popes Sixtus V, Innocent IX, Clement VIII, Paulus Vand Gregory XV. St. Robert Bellarmine died October 17, 1621, and was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1930. The following year, he was declared a Doctor of the Church.
