St. Roch
Saint Roch, an eminent servant of God, was born at Montpellier, France, in the 14th century. He served the plague stricken in Italy while on a pilgrimage of devotion to Rome. He bore incredible pains patiently and joyfully, and God was pleased to restore him to health. He then returned to France and practiced austere penances. The last years of St. Roch’s life were spent at Montpellier, where it is claimed he died in 1327.
Many cities have been speedily delivered from the plague by imploring his intercession. This was especially the case in Constance during the General Council which was held there in 1414. St. Roch’s body was translated from Montpellier to Venice in 1485, where it is honored in a beautiful church; certain portions of his relics, however, are shown at Rome, Arles and other places.
