St. Rose of Lima
It seems that God allowed one of the oracles of Peru to predict the birth and virtues of a child of the Incas, long before Christianity came among them in 1531. The prophecy ran thus: “When a strange (or foreign) race shall conquer Peru, the will claim his bride from among the daughters of the Incas, and thus the family of the children of the sun may return whence they came”. This tradition has come down through centuries among the Peruvians, and they believe it was fulfilled in Saint Rose of Lima.
When Rose was born in 1586, only fifty years after the Spanish conquest, she was noble by right of her Peruvian mother, in whose veins flowed the blood of the Incas, as well as on the father’s side, who came from a Spanish family of high descent. While she was baptized Isabel their parents soon changed her name to Rose on accord of her beauty. While still a mere child, her parents were astonished to see her refuse little dainties of which children are so fond, and to take in their place the coarsest, least refreshing food on the table.
When Rose was five years old, one day as she was playing with her brother, he threw, accidentally, some mud against her hair. She did not show any signs of anger, but as she turned to leave him, he said gravely: “Do not be displeased, my sister; I didn’t mean to do it. Besides, the ringlets of girls are sometimes cards that draw them to perdition”. The words sank deep into her heart. She recalled having been told why her name had been changed.
Rose of May
One night, dreaming of this, Rose saw the Blessed Virgin Mary, to whom she told her uneasiness. This heaven my Mother, who is called “A rose among thorns”, replied to her: “Your name, dear child, is very pleasing to my Son; henceforth you are to call yourself Rose of Mary”.
While still a child, her father suddenly lost his fortune and the family had to give up their way of life. Rose regarded this as an opportunity to practice her favorite virtues, and her fidelity was equaled by her cheerfulness. In vain did her parents put before her the advantages of a good marriage, for she had already chosen her Spouse, and she would serve Him, like St. Catherine of Siena, as a humble daughter of St. Dominic in his Third Order. This permitted her to live with her family, and to continue to serve them.
Every Saturday Rose adorned the Chapel of the Rosary from her garden. She was very skillful with her needle, and delighted in embroidering the vestments used at the altar. Once when there was no money to buy bread, Rose went to the closet and opened the chest, believing that God would provide for them, and there, indeed, were the loaves she desired, only whiter and of more beautiful shape than she had ever made. Another day when there was no honey, one of the necessaries of life in Peru, Rose went with confidence to the place where it was usually kept, and found sufficient to last them for eight months. Many other instances of favors received might be cited, but space forbids.
It was Rose who encouraged the people of Lima to erect the convent of St. Catherine of Siena in Peru, and pledged her word that the money required would be supplied. When her mother tried to dissuade Rose from persisting in her extravagant notion, Rose replied; “Well, my mother, you will see all that I have said coming true; for you will enter this convent, in it receive the Habit of a religious, make your vows and die in the peace of the Lord”. All of which came to pass.
Jesus Be With Me
Our Lord was pleased to reveal to Rose the time of her death, which took place on August 24, 1617. A short time before she died she was continually in raptures and ecstasies, notwithstanding the intense suffering she was undergoing. Two hours before she passed away, she said to her confessor in confidence: “O father, what great things I could tell you of the pleasures and consolations which God will bestow upon His Saints for all eternity! I go with inconceivable delight to contemplate the adorable Face of God, Whom I have loved all my life”. As she said twice, “Jesus be with me!” her ardent soul quitted earth for Heaven. She died at the age of 31, and was canonized in 1671.
