St. Albert the Great
St. Albert the Great (Albertus Magnus) was born in Swabia about 1206, and as a child had a very special love for the Blessed Virgin. He pursued his studies at Padua and in 1223 he entered the Order of St. Dominic. After completing his studies he taught theology at Hildesheim Freiburg, Ratisbon, Strassburg and Cologne.
A Great Scholar
In 1245 he was ordered to go to Paris, where he received the Doctor’s degree in the university. While teaching in Paris and Cologne, amongst his students was St. Thomas Aquinas, whose genius he recognized and whose future greatness he foretold. In 1254 Albert was elected Provincial of his Order in Germany, but resigned the office in 1257 so as to be able to devote himself to study and to teaching.
In 1260 he was appointed Bishop of Ratisbon, and governed the Diocese two years, then voluntarily resumed the duties of a pro fessor in the Stadium at Cologne. Pope Gregory X called him to attend the Council of Lyons in 1274, and he took an active part in the deliberations. The announcement of the death of St. Thomas Aquinas at Fossa Nuova on his way to the Council, was a heavy blow to Albert, and he declared that “The Light of the Church” had been extinguished.
Sometime after 1278, St. Albert suffered a lapse of memory; his strong mind gradually became clouded, while his body, weakened by vigils, austerities and many labors, sank under the weight of years. He died at Cologne November 15, 1280. He is called “the Great”, and “Doctor Universalis” (Universal Doctor) in recognition of his extraordinary genius and extensive knowledge.
