St. Catherine Laboure
Zoe Laboure was born on May 2, 1806, and when she was nine years old her mother died; the child then found all her consolation in the Maternal Heart of Mary. The days passed, and when she received her First Holy Communion. she offered her virginal heart to Jesus. When she reached the age of twenty-four she entered the Novitiate of the Daughters of Charity on the Rue du Bac in Paris.
Marian Apparitions
One day she pleaded with her Guardian Angel to “Tell the Mother of God I wish to see her”. Her life-story tells us that it was about 11 p.m. on July 18, 1830, that Novice Catherine (which name she took in religion) heard someone call her by name. She drew aside the curtain of her bed and saw a beautiful child standing close by. The vision said: “Come to the chapel, the Holy Virgin is waiting for you”. Quickly donning her religious dress, the Novice followed the child.
Rays of light that issued from the angelic visitor lighted the way through the dark corridors. Upon reaching the chapel, the doors swinging open of themselves, the two entered. The chapel was filled with a brightness like that of the sun. Catherine knelt at the altar rail and prayed. At midnight her celestial guide said to her: “Behold the Mother of God”. Instantly she heard the rustling of a silken garment and a beautiful Lady appeared, seating herself on a large chair at the Gospel side of the altar. Filled with awe. Catherine knelt at the feet of the Blessed Mother and placed her hands on the knees of the “apparition”. “At that moment”, she told her Superior later, “I felt the greatest happiness of my life.”
The Miraculous Medal
The second apparition occurred November 27th, and the third early in December. On the second occasion, St. Catherine records that the Blessed Virgin appeared as if standing on a globe holding a globe in her hands; and as if from rings set with precious stones dazzling rays of light were emitted from her fingers. These, she stated, were symbols of the graces which would be bestowed on all who ask for them.
Then an oval frame formed around the Blessed Virgin and Catherine read in letters of gold: O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. The vision reversed and she beheld the letter “M” surmounted by a cross, at the foot of the cross a bar, and below all the Heart of Jesus crowned with thorns, and the Heart of Mary pierced with a sword. A voice said to her: “Have a medal made according to this model. Persons who wear it when it is blessed will receive great graces, especially if they wear it suspended about their necks”.
This medal is now universally known as “The Miraculous Medal”. During the first apparition, the Holy Virgin said to Catherine: “When you have sorrows or troubles bring them to the altar and lay them in the Heart of Jesus; there you will receive all the consolation and strength you need”. Mary also foretold that Catherine would have many difficulties to undergo; but she encouraged her to have confidence, and then promised: “You will always have the graces necessary to withstand your trials…. I myself will be with you to bring you the graces you need”…”Grace is shed most abundantly on those who ask for it in prayer; but, alas, where are those who pray!”
St. Catherine died December 31, 1876, and was canonized by Pope Pius XII on July 27, 1947
