The Life of Saint Aaron
Saint Aaron was a hermit, an abbot, and a companion of Saint Malo in the sixth century. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church, especially in Brittany and Wales. He is also considered a patron saint of those who live passionate, steadfast lives. Here are some facts about his life and legacy.
- He was born on the British Isle, possibly in Wells, but the exact date of his birth is unknown.
- He devoted his life to Christ and became a hermit, living on an island near Aleth, France. The island was accessible by land during low tide and he was visited by many disciples, including Saint Malo, who shared his apostolic ministry with him.
- He became the abbot (father and leader) of a monastery on the island, where he guided many monks in the spiritual life. He was known for his holiness, wisdom, and miracles.
- He died around the year 522 and was buried on the island. The island bore his name until 1150, when the bishop of Aleth moved his see to the city of Saint Malo, which encompassed the whole island. The island then became known as Saint Malo Island.
- His feast day is June 22 in the Latin Church and December 16 in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He is depicted in art as a hermit with a staff and a book, sometimes accompanied by Saint Malo or an angel.
Saint Aaron is an example of a faithful follower of Christ who lived a simple and humble life, dedicated to prayer and service. He inspired many others to seek God and to grow in holiness. He is a model for us today to live with passion and steadfastness for the Lord.
