Carmen was the third of ten children born to a wealthy and devout family. From a young age, she felt a strong calling to serve God and at the age of 20, she entered the Carmelite Monastery of the Incarnation in Ávila. She took her vows as a Carmelite nun in 1535 and spent the next 20 years living a life of contemplation and prayer.
In 1560, Carmen experienced a profound spiritual transformation that led her to begin writing her spiritual works, including her famous book “”The Interior Castle.”” This book is considered one of the greatest works of Christian mysticism and describes the soul’s journey to union with God. She wrote many other works of spiritual writings such as “”The Way of Perfection”” and “”The Foundations”” which helped to guide people in their spiritual journey.

She and her friend, St. John of the Cross, established the Discalced Carmelite Order, which emphasized poverty, humility, and a return to the original spiritual practices of the Carmelites.
Carmen’s writings and her efforts to reform the Carmelite Order had a profound impact on the Catholic Church of her time. Her teachings continue to influence Catholics today, and her writings are considered classics of Christian literature. She has been canonized by the Catholic Church as a saint and is honored as a Doctor of the Church.
