 St. Clement Biography

St. Clement is a Christian saint and martyr who is believed to have lived in the 1st century. He is considered to be the third Pope of Rome and one of the earliest Apostolic Fathers of the Christian Church. He is known for his writings and his role as a leader in the early Christian Church.

According to tradition, Clement was one of the 70 apostles chosen by Jesus to spread the word of the Gospel. He is believed to have been a close companion of the apostles Peter and Paul, and to have played an important role in the early Christian Church in Rome.

Clement is said to have been appointed as Pope by Peter himself and was the fourth in the apostolic line of bishops that succeeded Peter. According to some early Christian traditions, Clement is said to have been exiled by the Roman Emperor Trajan, during a persecution of the Christians, and sent to work in a mine in the Crimea.

Clement is best known for his letter, 1 Clement, which is one of the earliest Christian writings outside the New Testament. The letter, addressed to the Christian community in Corinth, is considered to be one of the earliest examples of Christian theology, and it deals with issues such as Christian leadership, unity, and moral conduct.

St. Clement’s name is also associated with the famous ‘Clementine literature’ a collection of writings attributed to Clement but in reality dating from much later, which has been a significant source for the early Christian Church’s beliefs, practices and governance.

Clement’s feast day is celebrated on November 23 by the Roman Catholic Church and some other branches of Christianity. He was commemorated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church, as well as the Oriental Orthodox Church, and the Anglican Communion.

In the medieval Church, Clement was venerated as a martyr and his cult was widely spread in the East as well as the West. Numerous churches were dedicated to him and many miracles were attributed to him.

Clement’s legacy continues to be felt in the modern world as his letter, 1 Clement, remains an important source of information about the early Christian Church and his teachings on leadership, unity and morality continue to be studied and admired today.

The Life of St. Clement

St. Clement was a Roman by birth, and we learn from his Epistle to the Corinthians that he was of Jewish descent. He was the fourth successor of St. Peter the Apostle, and according to Tertullian, writing in 199, the Roman Church claimed that Clement was ordained Bishop by St. Peter

In the midst of a great schism in the Church of Corinth, St. Clement wrote to the Corinthians in the name of the Church of Rome appealing for the restoration of peace and unity. In a second Epistle, he exhorted them to despise the vanities of the world for the sake of eternity. From earliest times it has been the belief that Saint Clement suffered martyrdom. The Church of St. Clement in Rome lies in the valley between the Esquiline and Coelian Hills, on the direct road from the Coliseum to the Lateran.

St. Clement governed the Church nine years, eleven months and twenty days. He died in the year 100.
