St. Daniel Biography

St. Daniel the Stylite was a 4th century Byzantine monk who is known for his extreme devotion to prayer and asceticism. He is revered as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church and is also known as St. Daniel the Stylite.

St. Daniel was born in 409 AD in Maratha, a village in Upper Mesopotamia in present-day Turkey. He entered a monastery at the age of 12 and lived there until he was 38 years old. After a voyage to Antioch, he retired in 451 AD into the ruins of a pagan temple where he spent nine years exorcising demons that threatened the public. He then had a vision of St. Simeon the Stylite standing on a column, and took this as a sign to adopt a similar lifestyle.

St. Daniel is best known for his practice of stylite monasticism, which involved living on top of a pillar or column as a way of physically separating oneself from the world and focusing on prayer and contemplation. He established his pillar north of Constantinople and lived on it for 33 years, enduring the harsh elements and standing through rain, snow, and freezing cold. His feet were reportedly covered with sores and cuts due to the continuous standing.

St. Daniel was visited by both Emperor Leo I and Emperor Zeno, and he came out against monophysitism, a heresy that denied the full humanity and divinity of Jesus Christ. He is remembered for his humility, obedience, hospitality, and love of poverty, as well as his strong commitment to the Church and his efforts to avoid the tares of heresy. He gave advice to his disciples before his death, encouraging them to hold fast to humility, practice obedience, exercise hospitality, keep the fasts and vigils, love poverty, and maintain charity.

St. Daniel is revered as a model of devotion and asceticism in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He is remembered for his endurance, faith, and dedication to helping and healing others, as well as his ability to receive and convey divine messages. He was also known for his efforts to maintain peace in the land and his willingness to descend from his pillar in order to do so. St. Daniel passed away on December 11, 493 and was mourned by many.

After his death, the people demanded to see him before his burial. He was placed on a plank and affixed in an upright position so that he could be viewed as an icon for all the people. He was then buried in the chapel of Saint Simeon in a coffin made of stone.

St. Daniel is remembered and celebrated on December 11th in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He is venerated as a model of devotion, endurance, and faith, and his legacy lives on through the many stories and legends that have been passed down through the centuries.
