St. Jane Frances de Chantal

St. Jane Frances de Chantal was a French Roman Catholic saint, who lived in the 17th century. She was born in Dijon, France, in 1572 to a noble family. She was married at a young age and had six children, but her husband died in a hunting accident when she was only 28 years old.

After her husband’s death, de Chantal dedicated herself to a life of piety and charity. She became involved in various religious organizations and was particularly drawn to the teachings of St. Francis de Sales, a French bishop and spiritual writer.

In 1604, de Chantal and St. Francis de Sales founded the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary, a religious order for women. The order emphasized humility, simplicity, and devotion to the poor and sick. De Chantal served as the first superior of the order and helped to establish convents throughout France.

De Chantal’s devotion and charity earned her a reputation as a saintly figure, and she became well-known for her wisdom and spiritual guidance. She also wrote several spiritual works, including letters and a biography of St. Francis de Sales.

De Chantal died in 1641 at the age of 69, and her death was met with widespread mourning. She was buried in the Visitation convent in Paris, and her tomb became a site of pilgrimage.

In 1767, de Chantal was beatified by Pope Clement XIII and canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1767. She is considered the patron saint of widows and of the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary.
