St. Kieran, also known as Ciaran or Kieran the Younger, is one of the most revered saints in Ireland. He is considered the first saint to have been born in Ireland, and the founder of the famous monastery of Clonmacnoise, which became a center of learning and culture for centuries. In this blog post, we will explore the life and legacy of this remarkable saint, who lived in the 6th century and was one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland.
St. Kieran was born around the year 516 in Roscommon, Connacht, to a noble family. His father was Lugna, a carpenter, and his mother was Liadain, a sister of St. Justus. According to legend, he was baptized by St. Patrick himself, who prophesied that he would become a great saint and teacher.
As a boy, Kieran worked as a herdsman, tending cattle and sheep. He showed signs of piety and wisdom from an early age, and was eager to learn about God and the scriptures. He also performed his first miracle when he restored a calf that had been killed by a wolf to life.
When he was about 15 years old, he left his home to pursue his education at the famous monastery of Clonard in Meath, where he studied under St. Finian, one of the most renowned teachers of his time. There he met many other future saints, such as St. Columba, St. Brendan, and St. Columbanus, who became his friends and companions.
At Clonard, Kieran distinguished himself by his intelligence, humility, and zeal for learning. He mastered the scriptures, theology, poetry, and languages. He was also known for his asceticism and charity, often fasting and giving away his food and clothes to the poor. He was said to be “a lamp, blazing with the light of wisdom.”
Monastic Foundation and Vision
After spending several years at Clonard, Kieran felt called to leave his monastic brothers and seek a more solitary life of prayer and contemplation. He traveled to Aranmore in Galway Bay, where he joined the community of St. Enda, another famous abbot and teacher.
There he lived in a small cell made of stone, spending his days in prayer, meditation, and manual labor. He also continued to study and teach, sharing his knowledge with his fellow monks and visitors.
One night, he had a vision along with St. Enda. They saw a great tree by a stream in the middle of Ireland, bearing abundant fruit and sheltering many birds. Enda interpreted this vision as a sign that Kieran should go and find such a place and found a monastery there.
Obeying the vision, Kieran set out to search for the site of his future foundation. He traveled through various regions of Ireland, preaching the gospel and performing miracles along the way. He also founded several churches and monasteries in different places.
Finally, he arrived at Clonmacnoise on the Shannon River, where he recognized the place of his vision. There he founded his most famous monastery in 548 with ten companions. He dedicated it to God and named it Cluain Moccu Nóis (the Meadow of the Sons of Nós).
Death and Legacy
The monastery of Clonmacnoise soon became one of the greatest centers of learning and culture in Ireland and Europe. It attracted scholars, monks, pilgrims, kings, and nobles from all over the world. It produced some of the finest works of literature and art in Ireland, such as the Annals of Clonmacnoise, the Book of Durrow, and the Cross of Cong.
However, Kieran did not live to see the full glory of his foundation. He died only seven months after its establishment from a plague that swept through Ireland in 549. He was about 33 years old.
He was buried at Clonmacnoise in a tomb made by his father Lugna. His relics were later enshrined in a silver shrine that was kept at the monastery until it was plundered by raiders in 1129.
St. Kieran is remembered as one of the most influential saints in Irish history. He is honored as the first Irish saint, the founder of Clonmacnoise, one of the Twelve Apostles of Ireland, and a patron saint of education.
His feast day is celebrated on September 9th.
