St. Marianne Cope: A Biography

St. Marianne Cope, also known as Mother Marianne of Molokai, was a Catholic nun who lived in the 19th century. She is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, and is considered to be the patron saint of lepers, outcasts and the marginalized.

Marianne Cope was born in 1838 in Germany, but immigrated to the United States with her family when she was two years old. She grew up in Utica, New York, where she attended Catholic school and developed a strong faith. After completing her education, she joined the Sisters of the Third Order Regular of Saint Francis, a religious congregation of Franciscan nuns.

As a nun, Mother Marianne dedicated her life to serving the poor and the marginalized. She spent over 30 years working in hospitals and schools, providing care and education to those in need. In 1883, she was appointed superior of the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse, New York, where she implemented many new and innovative practices, earning her reputation as a skilled and compassionate administrator.

In 1884, Mother Marianne was approached by the government of Hawaii, which was struggling to care for a rapidly growing population of lepers on the island of Molokai. Despite the danger and the uncertainty, Mother Marianne and a group of her nuns volunteered to travel to the island and care for the patients there.

Mother Marianne spent the next 30 years on Molokai, living and working among the lepers. She built hospitals, schools, and orphanages, and provided medical care, food and clothing to the patients. She also worked to improve the living conditions and to provide spiritual support, showing them love and compassion. Despite the harsh living conditions, Mother Marianne never wavered in her commitment to the lepers, and her work on Molokai earned her the respect and admiration of the patients and the local community.

Mother Marianne Cope died on Molokai in 1918, and her remains were buried on the island. After her death, her work and legacy continued to be celebrated, and many people came to see her as a powerful example of selflessness and compassion. On October 21, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI canonized her as a saint.

St. Marianne Cope’s feast day is celebrated on January 23rd. Her name is remembered and honored by many people around the world, who look to her as a model of Christian devotion and sacrifice.
