Biography of St. Vincent Ferrer

 St. Vincent Ferrer was a medieval Catholic priest, preacher and missionary, who lived in the 14th and 15th century in Spain and Italy. He is considered one of the most prominent preachers of his time, and is known for his extensive travels throughout Europe, preaching and converting many to the Catholic faith. He was born in Valencia, Spain, on January 23, 1350.

St. Vincent Ferrer joined the Order of the Friars Minor or the Dominican Order and studied at the University of Lérida and the University of Paris, where he obtained a degree in theology. He was renowned for his exceptional eloquence and knowledge of scripture, and soon became known as one of the most gifted preachers of his time.

St. Vincent Ferrer began to travel around Europe in 1398, preaching in various cities and towns, and promoting devotion to the Virgin Mary and penitence for sins. He was known for his powerful and persuasive sermons, which drew large crowds and led to many conversions. He preached not only in the towns but also to the common people, sometimes in the open air, and was known to have preached to as many as 30,000 people at once.

He also visited many universities, such as the University of Paris, the University of Oxford, the University of Bologna, and the University of Vienna. He engaged in many theological disputations, particularly with members of the Jewish and Muslim communities, and was highly respected for his knowledge and eloquence.

St. Vincent Ferrer is also known for his compassion towards the poor and his dedication to the welfare of the people. He often sold his own possessions to help the poor and the needy, and he also established schools, hospitals, and orphanages throughout the towns and cities where he preached.

St. Vincent Ferrer passed away on April 5th, 1419, in Vannes, France. He was canonized by Pope Calixtus III in 1455 and is considered a Saint by the Catholic Church. His feast day is celebrated on April 5th and many churches, schools, and other institutions bear his name.

The Life of St. Vincent Ferrer

Saint Vincent Ferrer is one of the greatest Christian heroes of the 14th century. His obedience, sweetness of temper, and unusual diligence in early years were considered by all as signs of his future holiness. He shared a special bond and love for the Blessed Mother, whenever he heard anything in praise of the glorious Virgin Mother of God, his soul so overflowed with joy that he could not restrain his tears. And when he read about, or heard a sermon on the Passion of Christ, he would also weep abundantly. St. Ferrer was not only remarkable for goodness and early piety, but he was also an outstanding student who excelled in all fields. He was never known to dispute or contend with anyone, and strove to conceal, rather than to display, his abilities.

Joining the Order of St. Dominic

When Vincent was eighteen he decided to enter the Order of St. Dominic, in Valencia, to the happiness of his parents. He was clothed in the Dominican habit on February 5, 1374, and was professed the following year. For three years he taught the students, and then was sent to complete his studies at Barcelona and Lerida. When only twenty-four, he wrote a book on philosophy, and at twenty-eight received the degree of Doctor in Theology.

Preaching During the Black Death

For six years he lectured on theological subjects and preached the Word of God to the people of Spain. Many came from neighboring towns and villages to hear the words of wisdom that fell from his lips. During the 14th century two terrible scourges inflicted the most serious evil on the Church. The first was the awful pestilence called the Black Death, which devastated the whole of Europe in the middle of the 14th century, killing one-third of the population of the world, including large numbers of the clergy and religious.

In order to fill the decimated rankings, men were in many places ordained quickly and without due caution, and thus often without a true vocation. As a result the adherence to the faith weakened among many Christians. St. Vincent not only properly instructed and converted the laity, but worked a striking reform among the clergy and religious orders to ensure proper adherence to the teachings of the faith.

The Great Schism

The second evil under which the Church faced was even more serious-the Great Schism. The evils arising from this scandal were many and grievous. St. Vincent was one of those raised up by God’s good Providence to bring the schism to an end and to remedy its effects. His labors to promote unity, and the agony of mind he endured in seeing the seamless garment of Christ rent by the schism, affected his health and endangered his life.

He fell gravely ill at Avignon and as he was eagerly welcoming death, a wonderful event occurred. His humble body was suddenly filled with heavenly light, and he saw Jesus Christ Himself shining like the sun, surrounded by a multitude of angels, while near Our Lord were His two glorious servants, St. Dominic and St. Francis.

God, after filling Vincent’s soul with joy by many loving words, manifested His desires regarding him: “I have chosen you as the herald of the Gospel, and My Will is that you should go through all Gaul and Spain, preaching the Gospel…. My Will is that you should boldly reprove the sins of men, and bid them prepare for the great judgment. Though wicked men will oppose you, fear nothing. I will be with you”.

This miraculous apostolate lasted twenty-one years. Besides the labors in Gaul and Spain, he preached through out Europe. Tens of thousands of persons were converted: Jews, Mohammedans, infidels, heretics. Though speaking only his native Spanish, he was understood in all tongues. Astounding miracles confirmed his words. So clear were his arguments from the Old Testament, and so persuasive were his words, that God was pleased through him to convert 25,000 Jews in different parts of Spain; their synagogues were changed into churches.

St. Vincent died in Brittany on April 5, 1419. He was canonized by Pope Callistus III on the Feast of SS. Peter and Paul, June 29, 1455.
