Biography
Saint Walburga (also spelled Walburge, Walburg, or Waldburg) was an English nun and saint who was born in the 7th century. She was the sister of Saint Willibald and Saint Winebald, and the daughter of Saint Richard, a nobleman from Wessex, England. Walburga was a devout Christian from a young age and, according to tradition, she was known for her piety and her devotion to God.
When she was a young woman, St. Walburga entered the religious life and became a nun. She eventually became the abbess of a convent in Germany, where she worked tirelessly to spread the Gospel and to care for the poor and the sick.
In addition to her work as an abbess, Walburga was also known for her miraculous healings and her ability to perform miracles. She was widely respected and admired by the people of her time, and she became a popular saint in the Middle Ages.
Despite her many accomplishments, Walburga is perhaps best known for her role in the Christianization of Germany. In the 8th century, she worked alongside Saint Boniface, the “Apostle of Germany,” to convert the German people to Christianity. She is credited with helping to establish many churches and monasteries in Germany, and she is remembered as a pioneer of the faith in that country.
Walburga died in 779 AD at the age of 84, and she was canonized a saint by the Catholic Church a few centuries later. Today, St. Walburga is venerated as the patron saint of healers, travelers, and those who suffer from fever. The feast day of St. Walburga is celebrated on February 25th.
