Biography of St. William

Saint William, the founder of the religious Congregation of Monte-Vergine, was left an orphan in infancy. Reared piously by some friends, at the age of fifteen he desired to lead a penitential life and left his native country, Piedmont, to make a pilgrimage to St. James’ shrine in Galicia, Spain.

Afterwards he chose a desert mountain in the kingdom of Naples, where he lived in perpetual contemplation and practiced most rigorous penitential austerities. Upon being discovered and his contemplation interrupted, St. William moved to Montevergine, between Nola and Benevento. Two Priests in the vicinity learning of his whereabouts and of his austere practices obliged him to permit some fervent men to live with him and imitate his austere life. Thus, in 1119, was laid the foundation of the religious Congregation of Monte-Vergine. St. William died June 25, 1142.
