St. Charles Lwanga and Companions Biography

St. Charles Lwanga and his companions were a group of Christian martyrs who lived in what is now Uganda during the 19th century. They were killed for their faith during a period of persecution under the rule of the Ugandan king Mwanga II.

St. Charles Lwanga was born in the 1850s and converted to Christianity in 1879. He was appointed as the leader of the Christian page boys at the court of Mwanga II and soon became known for his strong faith and leadership qualities. He and his fellow Christian converts were subjected to various forms of persecution, including imprisonment, torture, and execution for their refusal to renounce their faith.

One of the most well-known of St. Charles Lwanga’s companions was St. Joseph Mukasa, who was also a page boy at the court of Mwanga II. He was known for his courage and faith, and was one of the first to be martyred for his refusal to renounce Christianity. Other companions include St. Kizito, St. Denis Ssebuggwawo, and St. Gonzaga Gonza.

The persecution under Mwanga II came to a head in 1886, when Charles Lwanga and his companions were executed for their faith. They were burned alive at Namugongo, a place that is now a famous pilgrimage site in Uganda.
