St. Cyril and St. Methodius

St. Cyril and St. Methodius were two Christian brothers, monks, and missionaries who lived in the 9th century. They are known for their work in the Eastern Europe and are considered as the “Apostles of the Slavs”. They are credited with the creation of the Glagolitic and the Cyrillic alphabets, which played a key role in the spread of Christianity among the Slavic people.

Cyril, also known as Constantine the Philosopher, and Methodius, were born in Thessaloniki, Greece. They received a thorough education in Greek, Latin, and theology. Cyril, who was known for his intelligence and learning, became a monk at a young age, while Methodius, a gifted and strong-willed man, became a government official.

The brothers were summoned by Rastislav, the ruler of Great Moravia, to help him deal with the German priests who were trying to impose Latin as the liturgical language in his realm. They accepted the invitation and set out on their mission, accompanied by a group of disciples.

When they arrived, they quickly realized that the Slavic people did not have a written language and that they could not understand the Latin liturgy. So, they created the Glagolitic alphabet, which was adapted to the Slavic language, and began translating the Bible and other religious texts into Slavic.

Their work quickly spread, and they began to establish Christian communities throughout Great Moravia, and other parts of Eastern Europe, including Bulgaria and present-day Serbia. They also trained native priests and established schools to educate the people in the Christian faith.

The brothers’ work was not without opposition, especially from German priests who saw their use of the Slavic language as a threat to the Latin liturgy. They were arrested, imprisoned and finally exiled from Great Moravia, and sent to Rome to explain their mission to Pope Adrian II. They were ultimately vindicated by the Pope and their use of the Slavic language was accepted.

After their return from Rome, Cyril died in 869. Methodius continued their mission and was appointed the first bishop of the Slavs by the Pope. He continued to lead the Christian communities in the region until his death in 885.

St. Cyril and Methodius’ legacy continues to be felt in the present day, as their creation of the Glagolitic and Cyrillic alphabets played a key role in the spread of Christianity among the Slavic people, and they are considered as patron saints of Europe and also as the patron saints of the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Slovenia.

The Lives of St. Cyril

Saint Cyril was born in Thessalonica of a senatorial family. Renouncing secular honors he became a Priest and was consecrated Bishop by Pope Adrian II. When the Khazars (a people living between the Dar danelles and the Aegean sea) sent to Constantinople for a Christian teacher, St. Cyril was chosen, and his brother Methodius accompanied him. Their next mission was to Moravia, as the people there desired someone to instruct them and conduct Divine service in the Slavonic tongue.

St. Cyril invented an alphabet which enabled them to translate the Gospels and liturgical books into Slavonic, which aided immensely in the conversion of the Slavic people to Christianity. St. Cyril died in Rome on February 4, 869; and St. Methodius, worn out from his strenuous labors, died on April 6. 885. Formerly the feast of these Saints was celebrated on March 9th, but it is now commemorated on July 7th.
