St. Daria

St. Daria Biography

St. Daria was a Christian martyr who lived in Rome in the 3rd century. According to legend, she was a Greek priestess of Minerva or a Roman Vestal Virgin who converted to Christianity and married St. Chrysanthus, the son of an Egyptian patrician named Polemius or Poleon. Together, they chose to live a life of chastity and went on to convert a number of Romans to Christianity.

When this was made known to the Roman tribune Claudius, Chrysanthus was arrested and tortured. Claudius and his wife, Hilaria, two sons, and 70 soldiers converted to Christianity as a result of Chrysanthus’s faith and fortitude under torture. The Emperor had Claudius drowned, his sons beheaded, and his wife hanged. Daria was forced to live as a prostitute, but her chastity was defended by a lioness. She was brought before the Emperor Numerian and ordered to be killed. There are various accounts of how she was killed, including stoning, beheading, and burial alive in a pit.

The remains of Sts. Chrysanthus and Daria are believed to be located in three different places: Prüm in modern-day Germany, the monastery of Belli Locus in France, and the cathedral of Reggio Emilia in Italy. A scientific study of some of the bones in the cathedral in Reggio Emilia confirmed that they were the remains of a young man and a young woman in their late teens, dating back to the period between 80 and 340 AD. The feast day of Sts. Chrysanthus and Daria is celebrated on October 25.

St. Daria is remembered as a brave and faithful Christian who remained true to her beliefs even in the face of persecution and death. She is a model of courage and devotion for all Christians.
