St. Dymphna Biography- Patron Saint of those who suffer mental disorders

St. Dymphna Biography

St. Dymphna Feast DaySt. Dymphna, also known as St. Dimpna or St. Dympna, is a Catholic saint who lived in the 7th century. She is known for her bravery and devotion to God, and is the patron saint of those suffering from mental and nervous disorders, as well as victims of incest and abuse.

Very little is known about Dymphna’s life, but according to tradition, she was born in Ireland, the daughter of a pagan king and a Christian mother. Her mother died when she was young, leaving her as the only person her father could turn to for comfort. However, the king became infatuated with Dymphna and wanted to marry her, despite the incestuous nature of their relationship.

Dymphna, who had taken a vow of chastity, refused her father’s advances, and fled from Ireland with her confessor and a group of followers. They eventually settled in present-day Belgium, in the city of Gheel. There she devoted herself to helping the poor and the sick, and became known for her kindness and compassion.

However, Dymphna’s father, who had become increasingly unhinged after her departure, eventually found her and demanded that she return home to marry him. When she refused again, he flew into a rage and had her beheaded. The execution took place around the year 620.

After her death, stories of her miracles and her kindness began to spread and she was soon recognized as a saint by the local people. The story of her beheading by her father is well known, but some scholars believe that it might be legend rather than fact.

Dymphna’s remains were buried in the city of Gheel, and a chapel was built over her tomb. The chapel became a popular pilgrimage site, and soon a village grew up around it. The village of Gheel, where her remains are still preserved, became known for its care of the mentally ill, with many families in the village opening their homes to those in need of care and companionship.

Her cult grew through the Middle Ages and the early modern period, and her tomb in Gheel was a major pilgrimage site. In the 18th century, she was officially canonized by the Catholic Church and officially recognized as a saint.

St Dymphna is widely revered and her feast day is celebrated on May 15th. She is considered a powerful intercessor for those suffering from mental and emotional disorders, and is invoked by those seeking healing, hope and peace.

St. Dymphna teaches us how to manage family challenges

St. Dymphna experienced the emotional challenges of a divided family not built upon a foundation of faith. St. Dymphna was born in Ireland in the 6th century, her father was a pagan King; while St. Dymphna’s her mother was a devout Christian. The theological differences among her parents will have a significant impact on the holy saints life.

Dymphna was a sweet, charming child, beautiful like her mother. At an early age she consecrated her virginity to Jesus, whom she chose as her spouse.

The happiness of Dymphna’s childhood, however, was destroyed by the death of her dear mother. Her father, the King, grief stricken for a long time, was eventually persuaded by his staff to seek solace in a second marriage. He commissioned his staff to find a lady who would be as beautiful and good as his first spouse. In vain, they visited many countries to fulfill their search. Upon their return, they reported that they were unable to find anyone as charming and kind as his own lovely daughter, Dymphna.

The King, following their evil suggestion, decided to marry Dymphna, who was only fifteen years old. With persuasive, flattering words, he made his intention known to her. Horrified at the suggestion, Dymphna asked the King to give her forty days to consider the matter. Immediately, she sought the advice of Father Cerebran, the saintly Priest who had baptized her as an infant and served as her confessor. He suggested that St. Dymphna leave the country at once. Accompanied by Father Cerebran, the court jester and his wife, Dymphna hastily left Ireland.

St. Dymphna ministers to the ill

After a short stay near Antwerp, Belgium, they resumed their journey until they reached the small village of Gheel, Belgium. While in Belgium, St. Dymphna’s unwavering faith led her to care and minister to the those people who were treated as outcasts of the society: the handicapped, the mentally disabled and those with other disabilities. Many of these forgotten children of God came to the oratory Dymphna and her companions built in Gheel, where she, St. Cerebran and their companions lived as hermits.

When the King learned of his daughter’s departure, he was furious, and set out immediately with some of his followers. After some time, he discovered Dymphna’s place of refuge. At first, he tried to persuade her to return with him. When Father Gerebran rebuked him for his wicked intention, the King gave orders that Father Cerebrum should be put to death. With one blow, the executioners struck him on the neck and severed his head from his body.

Martyrdom of St. Dymphna

With heroic courage, Dymphna continued to reject all her father’s further attempts to induce her to return and remained committed to ministering to the outcaste. Infuriated, he lifted his dagger and struck off the head of Dymphna, his own child. The holy virgin’s body fell at the feet of her insanely raving father. St. Dymphna was joined the ranks of the virgin-martyr May 15th, between years 620-640.

Miraculous burial

After some time the villagers of Cheel buried the two martyrs’ bodies in a cave. Several years later, the residents of Gheel decided to give the bodies a more suitable burial. However, when they cleared the cave entrance, the workmen were amazed to find two beautiful white tombs, carved from stone as if by angelic hands. Upon opening St. Dymphna’s coffin there was found lying on her breast a red tile, with the inscription: “Here lies the holy virgin and martyr, Dymphna“.

The Saint’s remains were then placed in a small church. Later a magnificent church, the Church of St. Dymphna, was erected on the site where the bodies were originally buried. The relics of St. Dymphnana now repose there in a beautiful golden reliquary.

Increasing numbers of miracles and cures occurred, so that the fame of St. Dymphna, as patron saint of mental disorders, spread far and wide. The afflicted who have invoked the name of St. Dymphna praise her highly for help obtained.

As we gather to celebrate the feast day of St. Dymphna, we remember the story of a young woman who stood strong in her faith in the face of great adversity. Born into a noble family, Dymphna was known for her beauty, her kindness, and her deep devotion to God. Dymphna refused and fled with her confessor to a faraway land, but her father pursued them and ultimately had her martyred.
